How to Create a Tree Diagram in Word?

Despite not being a fully featured tree diagram maker, Microsoft Word can make basic tree diagrams. You can use it to draw a family tree or a complex math problem. So, get ready to plant a digital diagram.

You can create a tree diagram manually, but it’s time-consuming, and you won’t want to do it that way. Just add several similar shapes, enter text into them, and then put arrows or lines between them.

However, using pre-built SmartArt Diagrams, you can quickly add your desired diagram to your Word document and rename it as needed. Here’s how to do it.

How to Make a Tree Diagram in Word?

In Microsoft Word, you can make a tree diagram by following these steps:-

Step 1. Open a new or existing Word document.

Step 2. Navigate to the page where you want the tree diagram to appear.

Step 3. Click on the Insert tab in the menu bar.

Step 4. Click on the Insert a SmartArt Graphic button in the Illustrations group to open the “Choose a SmartArt Graphic” dialog.

Step 5. To make a tree diagram, you can choose one from a number of pre-designed SmartArts. You can select one from List, Process, Cycle, Hierarchy, Relationship, Matrix, Pyramid, or Picture. Once done, click the OK button.

Step 6. When you’re done, a pop-up window will appear on the screen where you can type your desired text. For that, click on the [Text] and type the desired word. Once the text is entered, you can see a preview on your Word document.

Step 7. When editing is done, close the “Type your text here” dialog box by clicking the x icon.

Step 8. To add more shapes to any shape, select it and right-click on the shape in the diagram. In the menu that appears, hover the mouse cursor on Add Shape, and you will find the following options:-

Add Shape After – Adds a new shape after the selected shape.
Add Shape Before – Adds a new shape before the selected shape.
Add Shape Above – Adds a new shape above the selected shape.
Add Shape Below – Adds a new shape below the selected shape.

Step 9. Once you add the desired shape, in the pop-up window, enter the text that you want to appear in shape.

That’s it. The tree diagram is now complete.
