What is Microsoft OneDrive, and why use it?

OneDrive is a cloud storage provider if you ever used iCloud or Google Drive before; OneDrive combines with windows 10 as a default location for saving data, giving Microsoft account users 5GB of free storage space regular account. It’s the exact same thing except it’s Microsoft’s version of it and what it means to store your files in the cloud, but what does it mean to put a file there? The easiest way to think of it is at home you have your own computer. When you put a file or document in the cloud, you’re putting it on a Microsoft computer, and some Microsoft refers to their computers and servers. Their server is set in many different data centers worldwide, but anytime you put a file on the cloud, you’re putting it on one of the servers in one of these data centers.

If you are using windows 10, it’s straightforward because OneDrive comes pre-installed on Windows 10. So you don’t have to do anything to get OneDrive; you could simply start taking advantage of it. If you are on Windows 7 or 8, and for whatever reason, you don’t want to upgrade to Windows 10, you can simply download OneDrive from its official website. The application is available for Android OS and for iOS users as well.

How can we get started with OneDrive on the PC?

Once you have installed OneDrive on your PC, you should now see a cloud icon appear in the bottom right-hand corner. It also gives you an update on the current status; click on this icon and do as directed to upload/sync the documents.

You can simply drag and drop the files/documents to the OneDrive section for the automatic sync or backup.

The most interesting thing about it is when you log in through the web page, you find “Personal Vault.” This is a special folder within OneDrive where you can put files; this is meant for files that you want to stay very secure. To be able to enter into the Personal Vault, you could set up two-factor authentication. Typically you also either have to type in a code on your phone, or you have to get a code via email and then enter in that code to be able to access the Personal Vault suits, an extra layer of security for your sensitive and important files and photos to keep things ultra-secure over the cloud.
